April 2, 2019 - A large crowd filled the IOOF in Coulterville on March 2nd and enjoyed a fascinating pictorial presentation by Mariposa native Tom Phillips of the linking of southern and northern Mariposa County via what is now known as Highway 49.  This was the first of three spring Lecture presentations.

Next up, on Saturday, April 6th, Native American National Park Service Rangers Ben and Kimberly Cunningham (Kimberly is retired, Ben works with the Interpretation Division giving talks at the Indian Museum and on the Valley Tours) will share their knowledge of local Indian culture.  Kimberly specializes in basket weaving and Ken makes and plays flutes, knaps arrowheads and makes knifes along with teaching and participating in international cultural events throughout the world.

Then on Saturday, May 4th, Scott Carpenter, Yosemite National Park Archaeologist & Branch Chief of Cultural Resources, will present a fascinating picture of plant, animal and human life in our vicinity as it was some 4,000 years ago.

Both of these free presentations will also be held at the IOOF hall in Coulterville, located at 5030 Main St.  The April 6th event will start at 2:00 P.M. and the May 4th one at 4:00 P.M.  The programs are designed to entertain and educate kids of all ages from 6 to 106!  Refreshments will be provided; donations are always appreciated.

Northern Mariposa County History Center Serves Up Breakfast the Second Sunday of Every Month!

Take a spring drive through our lush green hills carpeted with a spectacular season of wildflowers over to the Old Schoolhouse, located at the corner of Broadway and Cemetery Sts. in Coulterville and enjoy a great breakfast when you get there served from 8:00 A.M. ‘till 11:00 A.M.

On Sunday, April 14th: All-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs cooked the way you want them, bacon or sausage are served from 8:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.  Adults are $5.00, children just $3.00 and a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) is $15.00…a great bargain for you and an important fund-raiser for the museum…

Mothers of America, Unite! ...at the Northern Mariposa History Center's Annual Mother's Day Breakfast on May 12th!
Start Mother’s Day off with someone else doin’ the cooking!  Bring your families and friends on over to the Coulterville Schoolhouse on Mother’s Day Sunday, May 12th.

In addition to our usual $5.00 all-you-can-eat pancake, meat and eggs breakfast, we will also be preparing a variety of omelet breakfasts for a mere $7.50.  We'll be offering a choice of Vegetable, Ham or Cheese  (or a combination of two) …Or the fabulous STRAWBERRY Omelet!

A Sierra Flowers signature bouquet will be our extra-special raffle item. Win it for Ma (or yourself)!  All ladies will receive a flower as they leave, full and happy. See you there - between 8:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M.!

And after a scrumptious breakfast, come on over to the museum and check out our great 2019 displays, including the Victorian Parlour that features a wonderful settee gleaned from the many artifacts found in the Barrett room.  The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 A.M. ‘till 4:00 P.M.

These breakfasts are a fund-raiser for the Northern Mariposa History Center, a private, nonprofit organization.

5 4 19 Rose Tour 300Heritage Rose Tour & Sale on May 4th - Rain or Shine!
The Northern Mariposa County History Center’s annual Heritage Rose Tour & Sale takes place on Saturday, May 4th

Both a long and a short walking tour through the historic town of Coulterville, led by representatives of the Rose Rustlers, will begin at 10:00 A.M., starting at the Coulterville History Center.  The shorter of the two will last about an hour, ending at the museums will complimentary refreshments will be available.  Those up to a longer, 1 ½ to 2-hour walk will hit some of the roses a bit further out. And will also conclude back at the museum.  After the tours, beginning at noon, rooted cuttings from many of the local roses will be available to purchase. We have photos of all of the varieties.  Those in one-gallon pots are $7 and those in 5-gallon pots are $15.   

A new addition to Coulterville’s Heritage roses was identified last year, the Lady Forteviot, and it will be among the varieties available for purchase.  A full list of the varieties available, along with photos of most of them, can be found on the Heritage Rose Tour Facebook page.   Please call (209) 878-3015 and leave your name, how many in your party so we know how many to expect.

Volunteers Needed
The NMCHC is always in need of new volunteers both for our Docent program as well as for our various committees.  Those interested in being a Docent must be willing to donate 3 hours of their time once a month to help us keep the museum open to the public during all regularly scheduled hours.  The committees vary, depending on what is going on and your interests.  So, whether you love to work in the garden, want to assist serving breakfast, like to do research, enjoy restoring, repairing and/or building things, we encourage you to give us a call at (209) 878-3015 and leave your contact information.
