Homeless Advocate to Address Local Democrats

Susan TaberApril 9, 2019 - Susan Taber, a former county employee who established the homeless shelter, is speaking to the Mariposa Democratic Club on Saturday, April 13 at 9:30 a.m. at Miners Roadhouse located at 5159 Hwy. 140 in Mariposa.

Since last fall the county has been charged with providing temporary housing for the homeless population. Groups are also working to prepare and provide a warm cooked dinner in the evening. Other agencies are working to provide other services for the population and help them address their needs and, hopefully, gain meaningful employment and find permanent housing.

For decades Mariposa had one overtly homeless person and others who remained unseen. In the past few years the problem has exploded nationwide and has grown locally. Some are homeless on the streets, and some are considered homeless by because they “couch surf” among friends. Many more are living on the edge and could soon be homeless.

While controversial, the California courts ruled that local governments needed to address the population. That was when the county stepped in and set up temporary tents. They are currently situated above the Human Services Building on Hwy 49N and the county is looking at other arrangements.

Taber was hired by the county last fall to supervise the project and worked in conjunction with the county health department. While she is no longer in that position, her informative talk will bring everyone up to speed on the situation and she will answer some of the questions people have on the topic. She will also address efforts she is making as a private citizen.

After Taber speaks, there will be a brief informative presentation from Jim Whelly about the Mariposa County Democratic Central Committee and how it functions within the county and with the California Democratic Party.

The meeting is open to the public and everyone is welcome. It is free and coffee and water is provided. If you wish to order breakfast for yourself, please arrive by 9:00 a.m. The club will also have a very brief business meeting. Memberships are available for a low nominal fee.
