Pastors Corner 200

May 14, 2019 - I’m writing this on a Monday, a common day off for pastors. Earlier, I was going through some old emails and was reminded that this last Sunday (May 12th) marks the sixth-year anniversary of Mariposa Reformed Baptist Church’s founding. I didn’t realize that and yet still worked on a sermon about the Lord’s Day. Pastors, isn’t it funny when that happens? The sermon didn’t have anything new in it though. The points I was trying to make are the same points I’ve always brought up and have been brought up by the preachers before me that God “does the verbs/actions” and that we are to rest upon him.Elder Wynter Sturtevant

What we need to hear every Sunday is the good news that God sent his Son to die and redeem sinners. That is good news because we are sinners and part of our disobedience is how we try to cling to our own corrupted ways of making us right with God. It is the Christian message that we do not rest upon our work, our imperfect obedience, but rest on the perfect obedience of Christ. This chief gift of grace is the primary reason we come together of the Lord’s Day, a day of rest for the restless. We read in Hebrews, “So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God,  for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.” In our church’s liturgy, every part of it is a recognition of God “doing all the verbs” and that we are to rest on Him. Rest in knowing that because of and through Christ, we are forgiven.
