Welcome NAO the Robot to the Library June 1

May 18, 2019 - The Mariposa Library is holding a Welcome to Mariposa party on Saturday, June 1 for the latest addition to their staff—a two-foot robot named NAO. The event starts at 10:00 A.M. with an introduction to NAO and a chance to dance, do Tai chi and talk with him/her, followed by a robot scavenger hunt and robot-style refreshments.

RobotMariposa Library staff member Becca Middleton (pictured) prepares NAO the Robot for his Welcome to Mariposa party.

NAO, whose name means “brain” in Japanese, would like a cool new name that will help him/her to fit in to his/her new home. A “New Name for NAO” contest will be held during the party. The contest will be open to children aged eight to 18. The winner will be notified by phone or email and will be awarded a mini robot building kit. Entries will also be accepted at the Library prior to the party.

The robot was purchased with a $10,000 Library Services and Technology Act copycat grant from the California State Library. The project is patterned after a similar robotics program at the Palo Alto City Library.  The robot will be used to teach beginning coding workshops and also integrated into other Library services, including story time, the homebound program, family literacy and outreach activities. It can be programmed to respond to voice cues and has facial recognition capabilities, as well as the ability to perform complex movements

The first coding with the robot workshop will be held on Thursday, June 13 at 3:00 P.M. for ages 12 through 18. Registration is required. Future workshops will be held for other age groups and at branch libraries. Register in person at the Library, call (209) 966-2140 or email karen.dusek@mariposalibrary.org.
