May 18, 2019 - Living in the Sierra foothills is a great opportunity to view Mother Nature at her finest. While residents enjoy the area’s unique and wondrous flora and fauna, they are at risk of experiencing the devastation of wildfires.

Fortunately, there are ways of mitigating the threat of wildfires to our properties by creating beautiful landscapes that are fire-wise and drought-tolerant. You can see a perfect example of this by attending an open house of the Cal Fire Firewise Garden. Designed by UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa County in collaboration with Cal Fire, the garden demonstrates firewise and drought-tolerant examples for a variety of landscaping situations.

Stroll through this garden full of flowering shrubs, ground covers, edible landscaping, and dry streambeds. Notice the California natives and Mediterranean landscaping that are strewn with drought-and fire-tolerant plants. Enjoy the colorful variety of shrubs and flowers that make a pleasing, low-maintenance landscape especially suited for our foothill region.

This open garden event will take place on Saturday, May 25 at the Cal Fire MMU Headquarters at 5366 Hwy 49 North, Mariposa from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.  UC Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer gardening questions and provide tours of the garden beds. Please call (209) 966-2417 if you have any questions.
