May 25, 2019 - CLOVIS, Calif. - Sierra National Forest (SNF) officials are requesting public comments and initiating scoping for the Motorized Recreation Project (Project) Environmental Assessment (EA). The Project area includes: identified maintenance level 1 (ML1) roads, trails, and areas across the SNF, outside of designated Wilderness areas. Based on the purpose and need for action as a result of the minimization criteria analysis process, the SNF proposes adding approximately 45 miles of trails, and 12 areas (11 acres) to the National Forest Trail System. Of those 45 miles of proposed routes, 3.8 miles are proposed to change from ML1 roads to trail.

The Project is bound by the Kings River to the south, Merced River and Yosemite National Park to the north, west of the Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness areas, within the confines of the Sierra National Forest.

A detailed description of the need for the Project and the Proposed Action is available on the Forest website at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=55572

To assist the SNF, submitted comments should be as specific as possible and explain the reason behind your concerns, to assist the Forest in identifying, and considering issues and challenges on the proposed action.

Please access maps available on the web page to aid in your comment specificity. Comments received in response to scoping will be considered part of the public record. Public scoping period is 30 days, ending at midnight on Monday June 17th, 2019.

• Send written comments to: Dean Gould, Forest Supervisor, c/o Jody Nickerson-Powell, Sierra NF, 1600 Tollhouse Rd, Clovis, CA  93611

• Electronic responses, in acceptable plain text (.txt), rich text (.rtf), or word (.doc or .docx) formats, may be submitted to comments-pacificsouthwest-sierra@fs.fed.us/ using Subject: Motorized Recreation Project.

Please include full citations for all referenced literature in your scoping comments, this will enable the Forest Service to best utilize your comments. The Forest Service reserves the right to request copies of any literature cited in the scoping comments.

The Public is invited to join us on June 11th, 2019, for a public meeting at the Forest Supervisor’s Office, in Clovis, CA from 6:00 to 7:30pm. We encourage you to take this opportunity to ask Forest Service employees questions about the proposed action and other details that would assist you in commenting during this scoping period.
