May 31, 2019 - Learn to create stunning artwork on fabric with paint and toothpaste at a Green S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace workshop at the Library on Thursday, June 6 (Part I—design) and Thursday, June 20 (Part II—paint). The workshops are free and take place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
All ages are welcome, but preregistration is required. Children aged nine and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should wear old clothes as paint and toothpaste formula may cause permanent stains.
Batik is a form of resist art that traditionally uses melted wax to create designs. When the wax hardens, the fabric is dyed and then the wax is removed, leaving behind the design on the undyed portion. This method was simplified in recent years by the discovery that a mixture of toothpaste and hand lotion can be used to achieve virtually the same effect. This is the method that will be used during these workshops.
