June 3, 2019 - The Mariposa County Arts Council invites the public to the opening reception welcoming new work from three painters: Hannelore Fischer, Lorie Setterburg, and Wei Zhang on Thursday, June 6 from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Treetop Gallery located in historic downtown Mariposa (5009 Hwy 140, Mariposa CA). Light refreshments will be served.
All three artists in this exhibition are masters of technical application in their own definite styles:
Feeding Grounds, by Hannelore Fischer
Fischer uses acrylic paint mixed with a clear medium with a stippling and reduction process to build abstract textural pieces inspired by botany, microbiology, and celestial imagery. When describing her composition process, she says, “I recreate the energy I remember from my outdoor experience, and intend to capture movement as well as stillness. My work is an investigation into interconnectedness.”
Stellar's Jays, by Lorie Setterburg
Like many local artists, Setterburg’s primary subject is the surrounding Sierra Nevada landscape and Yosemite Valley. Her new work reinterprets those familiar vistas with bold, earthy oils and broad, structured paint strokes. She describes her modus operandi when creating a painting as “…less is more. Most of my time planning is spent just thinking about my vision of the finished piece. The immediacy and quickness of my process and limited palette produces colors on the canvas that I love effortlessly.”
Scroll, by Wei Zhang
Similarly inspired by nature, Zhang applies a poetic approach to traditional Chinese calligraphy, painting, and ink illustration on large scale scrolls. Her simple process yields beautiful results, by “ . . . hooking, rubbing, spotting, dyeing and coloring to capture mountains, water, trees, and flora,” following traditional Chinese freehand landscape technique. Zhang celebrates the contrast between her work and Western oil, watercolor and acrylic, saying, “Here is Yosemite through Chinese eyes!”
This exhibition will run at the Treetop Gallery from June 6 - July 28, 2019.
