July 18, 2019 - Washington - Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) released the following statement after the U.S. Forest Service agreed to delay implementing any changes to the California Fire Assistance Agreement until the end of the 2019 wildfire season:

“I’m pleased the Forest Service has agreed to maintain the California Fire Assistance Agreement for the rest of the year. This important agreement establishes how the federal government reimburses state and local fire departments and first responders for fighting wildfires on federal land, and it’s important that it continues uninterrupted throughout the 2019 wildfire season.

“Wildfires don’t stop at jurisdictional boundaries. A unified federal-state approach is essential to protect our communities. Cal Fire is one of the most professional, well-organized and highly skilled firefighting forces in the world, and I’m glad the federal government will continue to rely on that expertise and partnership.

“I want to thank Secretary Perdue and Chief Christiansen for working to strengthen the important relationship between California and the Forest Service as we enter the high point of another dangerous fire year.”

Background

In May, Senator Feinstein sent a letter to Secretary Perdue and Forest Service Chief Christiansen asking them to not make any mid-year changes to the California Fire Assistance Agreement. A copy of that letter can be read HERE.
