Keep Safe Online: How to Identify and Avoid Scams and Hacks

August 5, 2019 - Jennifer Moss, a local web developer and owner of Moss Web Works, said almost every week her local friends tell her their online accounts have been hacked or there’s another fake account under their name.

oakhurst california library madera countyAt a special workshop scheduled from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 noon at the Oakhurst Branch Library on Saturday, August 17, 2019, Moss said she will teach participants the skills on how to recognize fake accounts, scammers and how to minimize their risk of identity theft. The event will be held in the library’s Community Room at 49044 Civic Circle Drive, Oakhurst.

“When I attended Northwestern University in the 1980’s, I was one of the few students who owned a computer let alone knew how to use one!” she exclaimed.

Moss said she graduated at about the time personal computers were making their debut in the market, guiding her towards a career in computer technology and software development.

“In 1995, I transferred these skills to the internet arena and have been a web developer ever since,” she added.

Moss said her flagship website is BabyNames.com which she developed in 1996. The website, which is still popular today, has been featured on a host of news programs including CNN, MSNBC, the BBC, Fox NEWS and more. Moss also has a blog on technical issues at https://mosswebworks.com/blog.

Moss grew up in Chicago, but lived in Los Angeles for 22 years before moving to Oakhurst to be “closer to nature and to escape city life.” She has lived in the community for eight years.

The free workshop is sponsored by the Friends of the Oakhurst Branch Library. For more information, call (559) 683-4838 or visit www.oakhurstfobl.com.
