Generation Gap: Steve Bosque and Kevin DeWeese

August 14, 2019 - Big-wall first ascensionist Steve Bosque and his long-time apprentice, Kevin DeWeese will be giving a presentation at the Mariposa Museum on Saturday, August 24 at 6:00 P.M.  The event is Part 7 of the Speaker Series featuring a History of Rock Climbing in Yosemite Valley.

Mentorship in the Yosemite Valley big-wall scene creates a sense of continuity between generations.  Steve Bosque stands on the shoulders of both Warren Harding and Jim Bridwell. His mentorship of Josh Mucci and Kevin DeWeese carries the ideas and meaning of big-wall climbing into the future, as exemplified with DeWeese’s mentorship of the next generation of big-wall first ascensionists such as Tyler Poston.

Bosque and DeWeese’s accomplishments extend beyond big wall climbing.  Bosque is a nurse and has worked at the Edgewood Center for Children and Families in San Francisco for nearly twenty years.  DeWeese began his career as an educator 13 years ago as an AMGA certified rock-climbing instructor and high school teacher.  He is currently the Director of Education at the Sylvan Learning Center of Brentwood.  Bosque has put up nearly 30 big-wall routes since 1975 and aims for more.  At every opportunity (usually after a long work week), DeWeese heads to the Valley to work on new projects.  He is a few weeks away from completing his 9th big-wall first ascent.

Admission for the event is free.  A $5 appetizer buffet and $2 beer and wine courtesy of Charles Street Dinner House will be available.  Food will be served at 6:00 P.M.  The presentation will follow at 6:30 P.M.  Please visit the Mariposa Museum on Facebook for event information and updates or call (209) 966-2924.

The museum is located at 5119 Jessie St., Mariposa.  Visit the Mariposa Museum website at MariposaMuseum.com.
