January 13, 2015 - Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced a new report on the steep potential cost to California of House Republicans’ Homeland Security funding bill to reverse President Obama’s executive actions that restore fairness and accountability to our broken immigration system.

nancy-pelosiRepublicans are threatening to shut down the Department of Homeland Security, planning to attach a series of radical anti-immigrant amendments designed to end the President’s Immigration Accountability Executive Actions and the immigration enforcement priorities that focus resources on deporting felons, not families.

“The President’s executive actions to restore common sense to our broken immigration system honor our values and strengthen our economy,” said Leader Pelosi.  “It is outrageous that Republicans would threaten our national security to advance radical anti-immigrant measures that will damage our economy.”

The state-by-state report, based off of data from the White House Council of Economic Advisors, projects the President’s Immigration Accountability Executive Actions will grow the economy by $90 to $210 billion over the next ten years – which translates to an increase of $11.7 to $27.5 billion of California’s GDP.  The CEA data also show the executive actions will have no impact on the likelihood of employment of U.S.-born workers, and would raise average wages for U.S. born workers by $170 a year.  All of these increases would be lost under House Republicans’ radical anti-immigrant Homeland Security bill.

“Republicans are taking an extremely dangerous and cavalier approach to the safety of American families,” continued Leader Pelosi. “Republicans should reconsider this reckless agenda, and come together with Democrats to swiftly restore certainty to the funding of Homeland Security.”
