One more week to submit formal written comments on the revised draft environmental impact statement and revised draft forest plans

September 20, 2019 - Sequoia and Sierra National Forests Supervisors announce the following:

Dear Valued Member of the Community,

The Sequoia and Sierra National Forests released their revised draft environmental impact statement and revised draft land management plans (forest plans) earlier this summer, making them available for a 90-day public comment period. The comment period started on the date of publication of the Environmental Protection Agency notice of availability in the Federal Register on June 28, 2019. Now, there is just one more week to submit your formal written comments before the end of the comment period, which closes on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific.

We are interested in hearing your feedback on these revised draft documents through formal written comments submitted to the Plan Revision Team. Submitting written comments will help us develop the final environmental impact statement and final forest plans that will guide management of the two national forests for the subsequent 15 years.

As a reminder, there are three ways to submit formal written comments: By email to r5planrevision@fs.fed.us; by mail to Plan Revision Team Lead, 1323 Club Drive, Vallejo CA 94592; and by electronic comment form at https://fs.usda.gov/project/?project=3375 (Comment on Project under Get Connected).

Earlier versions of these draft documents were released in 2016. We have since revised the draft documents to address changed conditions across the landscape, including extensive tree mortality, and other concerns brought up through public participation. The revised draft documents available for review can be found on the project website at: https://tinyurl.com/usfs-r5planrevision (click Forest Planning Documents page, upper-right Quick Links box).

Planning team members received questions throughout the comment period, including those submitted during the July and August Office Hours webinars, and compiled their responses in forest management themed Question & Answer documents. We encourage you to review these documents before submitting formal written comments as they may provide additional context and inform your comments. We also encourage you to watch the Forest Plan Revision Orientation webinar and Virtual Office Hours webinars for more information on the revised draft forest plans and plan revision process.

The Q&A documents and videos will soon be posted to the Public Involvement and Outreach page on the project website (see link above). For immediate access, you can find the Wildland Fire & Vegetation Management, Wildlife Management, Aquatic Ecosystem Management, and Recreation and Other Management Q&A documents at: https://fs.usda.gov/project/?project=3375 (Supporting Information tab, Public Engagement - Current drop-down list).

For further information contact the Team Lead, Fariba Hamedani, at 707-562-9121 or by email to fariba.hamedani@usda.gov. Thank you for your continued interest in your public lands.

Sincerely,

Teresa Benson, Forest Supervisor, Sequoia National Forest
