September 30, 2019 - SACRAMENTO – Last week, California made a significant step toward fulfilling a promise made by Governor Gavin Newsom in his inaugural address by ending a private cdcr logoprison contract for the second time this year. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is no longer housing inmates in the Central Valley Modified Community Correctional Facility effective Thursday, Sept. 26, and is officially ending its contract on Sept. 30. The prison had the capacity to house up to 700 inmates.

Earlier this year, CDCR ended its use of out-of-state facilities when it terminated the contract with the La Palma Correctional Facility in Eloy, Arizona, on June 25.

“Private, for-profit prisons have been used for many years to help the state overcome prison overcrowding challenges, but it is time to end our reliance on them,” said Governor Newsom.

This leaves CDCR with contracts at only three private community correctional facilities, which are located in McFarland and Adelanto. As of Sept. 25, about 1,400 inmates were housed in those private prisons in California.
