Join the Fun—Become a UC Master Gardener

October 14, 2019 - Want to learn more about gardening and landscaping? Want to help your community promote sustainable practices? Want to learn from University of California Agricultural Advisors? Become a Master Gardener! The UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa County are currently accepting applications for new members into its growing ranks. The 2020 Master Gardener training class will be held from January 8th - April 4th on Wednesdays from 2:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. (and a few Saturdays) at the UCCE office in Merced (2145 Wardrobe Ave.).

Master Gardener volunteers are trained representatives of the University of California. Classes cover horticulture, tree and lawn care, home vegetable gardening, water management, home orchards, weeds, plant diseases, soil and fertilizer management, composting, plant propagation, and more. After graduating, Master Gardeners volunteer in their local community “to extend research-based knowledge and information on home horticulture, pest management, and sustainable landscape practices.” Volunteer opportunities are varied and can work with any schedule.

Wondering what we do?

Master Gardener staff a weekly helpline using University of California’s extensive library and resources to answer home gardeners’ questions submitted by phone, email or in person.

We answer gardening questions at the Farmers Market each Wednesday from May to October as well as at local events throughout the county. We man the horticulture building during the Mariposa County fair where you can see the flower and produce entries from local gardeners.

We maintain two demonstration gardens along the Mariposa Creek Parkway on Stroming Road and at the Coulterville Firehouse. Feel free to stop by and see our “works in progress” as we develop sustainable, deer-resistant, drought-tolerant, pollinator-friendly landscapes.

MG Training Class 2UC Master Gardeners assist local school and community gardens by offering educational resources and gardening advice and provide periodic demonstrations.

Each spring and fall, UC Master gardeners put on plant and garden art sales offering plants suited to our local climate and propagated by our very own propagation group of Master Gardeners as well as an annual spring garden tour to highlight unique features of home gardens throughout the county. We offer various free public workshops throughout the year to provide education on various horticulture topics.
