Pastors Corner 200October 31, 2019 - In the ending of Chapter 3 we read Matthew’s account of the baptism of Jesus. An important event in the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. John the Baptist had been preparing the way for the Messiah with his message of repentance and the kingdom of heaven being at hand. John, acting as a herald, proclaimed the message that Christ was coming. Jesus went to the Jordan to where John was to be baptized. John attempts to prevent Jesus, saying that he himself needs to be baptized by Jesus. Not the other way around. John’s message was of repentance, how could he baptize he who has nothing to repent for? John saw how far greater Jesus was to anyone else and that included himself.

Elder Wynter Sturtevant

What was the response that Jesus gave? Matthew 3:15, “But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.” Jesus points out that he has to be identified with His people as the bearer of their sins. For our sake he became sin who knew no sin (2 Cor. 5:21). It is an integral part of the Christian faith that Jesus Christ was the god-man for through him there is peace made between us and God. We look to Him who fulfilled all righteousness, something that we could never do. The righteous Son of God died for we the unrighteous. May that Gospel truth comfort you Christian and may you consider daily the gift that is Christ. For through Christ you are forgiven.
