November 19, 2019  - The Madera County Sheriff's Office reports a juvenile is in custody for possession of firearm on campus.

sheriff1Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney would like to reassure the public that there is no ongoing threat to the safety of staff or students.

On November 18, 2019 shortly before 2:00 p.m., Madera County Sheriff’s School Resource Deputy Hopper received a report of a student in possession of a handgun on campus at Yosemite High School in Oakhurst. Deputy Hopper immediately located the student and seized the weapon, a small .22 caliber handgun which was loaded.

The student, a 14 year old male whose identity will not be released due to his age, was taken into custody and booked into the Madera County Juvenile Detention Center for charges of felony possession of a firearm in public, felony possession of a firearm on school grounds, misdemeanor possession of ammunition on school grounds, and misdemeanor alteration of a serial number.

The investigation remains ongoing.

At this time, it is not believed that the student made any threats towards staff or students at the school, or that there is any ongoing threat to the safety of those on campus.

Anyone with information relating to this case is encouraged to contact the Madera County Sheriff’s Office at (559) 675-7770.
