Pastors Corner 200December 5, 2019 - Let us look at Chapter 4 in the Gospel of the Matthew, particularly verses 18 through 22.  Before this we read about Jesus’ baptism followed by his temptation in the wilderness. After his trials he begins his ministry and starts to preach. While walking by the Sea of Galilee Christ sees a group of people fishing. Starting in verse 19 we read, “And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” Christ does the same thing with another group and they followed him as well.Elder Wynter Sturtevant

I wonder what people were thinking back then. I bet folks were expecting Christ to pick the top Rabbis of his day to assemble his team. There could have been some well-educated folks who were finding the finest robes, shining all that needs shining, and working on an acceptance speech. They were ready to go when the Messiah called. Imagine the faces people would make when they heard that Christ called some fishermen and not Rabbis to follow him. Why would the Lord do that?

I think the answer comes out of realizing God is a jealous God. There really is no sharing of glory when it comes to God. We see fishermen becoming disciples, unlearned men teaching and preaching the Gospel. One cannot point to rabbinic education for the reason why the do the things they do because they didn’t have one. What is being shown to us is that ministry of Christ does not have as it’s foundation the works of man but relies on the power of the triune God. This includes your salvation reader. May you know and remember that through Christ you are forgiven.
