January 3, 2020 - We arrive at chapter 6 of the Gospel of Matthew. At the time of writing this, I finished preaching on this chapter last Sunday. The sermon was on verses twenty-five through thirty-four. I’m not going to copy and paste the whole passage. Verse twenty-five reads “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

Folks, that sounds great to hear but for many it takes a lifetime to understand and live under. Reading this alongside verse thirty-four we are told to not be anxious and also that there is certainly sufficient enough trouble each day that we don’t need to think about tomorrow’s trouble. It might sound crazy to us, perhaps even more to we who call ourselves Christians! We spend a lot of time worrying and thinking about what the next day will hold. If you add pesky legalism on top, you have anxiety overload. What are we to do? Rest. Think on how God provides for the birds in the air. Think on how God provides for the lilies of the field. Think on how much more He provides for those who are His children? No matter how sinful we are or how weak our faith is, He still clothes us. Our heavenly father will provide our daily bread. By the power of Jesus Christ, those who have faith in Him have our unrighteousness covered by His righteousness. We are healed by His wounds. Rest in Christ. Remember this. Our anxiousness seems so little when we remember the gifts we have been given and how through Christ we are forgiven.
