January 7, 2020 - Prune it, or lose it? Prune it correctly, or lose it? Heck, why should the backyard orchardist worry about pruning anyway?

Pruning a tree is the art and science of removing specific branches or stems to benefit the whole tree. A goal of pruning is to remove dead, damaged and diseased branches to help prevent insect & decay organisms from entering the tree. It is also important to thin a dense canopy on a tree to increase air and sunlight, resulting in fewer disease problems while boosting fruit production.

Although over-pruned trees and shrubs don't usually die if some part of the canopy remains, the damage from over-pruning can be extensive... So, although pruning may not kill your plant directly, over-pruned and/or improperly pruned trees, vines, and shrubs can die as a long-term result of the associated stress.

Knowing why, when, & how to prune your fruit trees, vines, and shrubs is critical to maintaining a healthy tree and maximizing your crop. With that in mind, the Mariposa Master Gardeners are offering a FREE “Pruning Fruit Trees” workshop on Saturday, February 8 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon in La Grange (details supplied at registration). Maxwell Norton, Emeritus Fruit and Nut Advisor for UC Cooperative Extension will be discussing tools, types of pruning cuts and demonstrating when and how to prune fruit and nut trees, vines and shrubs.

Registration is required for this FREE workshop to reserve your spot, receive handouts, and to be notified of any last-minute changes. Register online at cemariposa.ucanr.edu or call (209) 966-2417. Please bring a pencil or pen and notebook, although there may be handouts. Be sure to dress warmly and bring an umbrella (if rain is forecast) as this is an outdoor event.
