January 19, 2020 - Families, including grandparents, caregivers and single parents, are invited to come with their children to the Mariposa Library for activities and a light meal or snack on the first and third Wednesday from 6:00 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. or the first and third Thursday from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon at the Mariposa Library. Children will receive a free book appropriate to their age and reading level at the end of each workshop. Teens and English language learners are welcome. Registration is required.

An introductory workshop to be held on Wednesday, January 29 from 6:00 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. and repeated Thursday, January 30 from 10:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M., will center around the topic of helping children learn language skills and build their vocabulary through conversation.

The workshops, which are part of the Library’s adult literacy program, are designed to help families develop strategies for successful learning at home.

The program will continue through June, focusing on a different topic each month. Workshops will be divided into two parts. During the first part, adults and children will meet as two separate groups. The adults will learn, and practice activities modeled by the Library staff, while the children will take part in a story time and activity, such as a game or craft,  related to the skills and concepts the adults are learning. They will then meet together for a joint activity, followed by a meal or snack.

Upcoming topics are:

  • February—Playing with Sounds and Words
  • March—Building a Love of Books
  • April—Making the Most of Reading Time
  • May—Retelling—Building Reading Comprehension
  • June—Drawing and Writing

The adult literacy program is funded by a grant from the California State Library. Free tutoring for adults aged 16 and older is also available. For more information, or to register for the family workshops, visit the Library, email karen.dusek@mariposalibrary.org or go to the Library website at MariposaLibrary.org.
