January 31, 2020 - WASHINGTON - Congressmen Jim Costa (CA-16) and Darren Soto (FL-09) released the following statement after introducing a resolution which recognizes Fresno native Tom jim costa congressman california 16th districtFlores for his achievements in professional football and calls for his induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame:

“On the weekend when we’re celebrating the best in professional football, I can think of no better time to call for recognition of Tom Flores’ accomplishments on the gridiron,” said Costa. “As one of only two people in history – and first Latino - to win multiple Super Bowls as a player, assistant coach, and head coach, he has done more than enough to be deserving of this honor.”

“As society progresses, we become ever more mindful our nation’s diverse history, and the first Hispanic quarterback, Tom Flores, is no exception,” said Rep. Soto. “Flores was a multiple time Super Bowl Champion, both as a quarterback and as a coach. These victories are made even more meaningful by the fact that he was in every sense an NFL trailblazer. It’s time for his name to be etched into the history books with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I am proud to work with Congressman Costa to introduce this resolution!”

Flores, who attended high school in Sanger, California, has also made significant contributions off the football field since leaving the NFL. He has used his influence to raise nearly $2 million dollars to support local school districts’ science, art, and athletics programs through The Tom Flores Foundation.

Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) is an original cosponsor of the legislation and a fellow member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
