Pastors Corner 200February 18, 2020 - We read in Chapter 8 of the Gospel of Matthew an interesting event about Christ on a boat with his disciples. Jesus leaves the crowd that followed him down the mountain and after a few interactions with them gets on the boat with his disciples, sailing for his next destination. A great storm hits the ship and folks start losing their minds. Everyone except for Jesus, who was asleep. I picture in my mind scenes from the film The Perfect Storm, waves crashing upon the ship. Sails violently struck by high winds. The disciples of Christ going back and forth on the boat trying to keep it afloat. Jesus himself fast asleep amidst the chaos.Elder Wynter Sturtevant

What do the disciples do? We read that they went and woke the sleeping Jesus. They said, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” Thankfully we have Jesus’ response in verse 26 that reads, “And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.”  There is a lot tied in with that answer. I mean in one sense there is a question here. Why are they afraid? The Son of God is with them. Who, or in this case what, then shall they fear? That is a real part and in the Christian life may we strive to keep in our hearts set on the truth that we have nothing to fear thanks to Christ. Everything is going to be okay, thanks to Christ. The other part of Jesus’ answer is that he refers to the disciples as “o you of little faith”. We might immediately focus on the little part and little must be an absolute bad right? (insert sarcasm) I ask of you to read what Christ did for these men of little faith. He still saved them from the storm and brought upon a great calm. Let it be known that it is not how big or how little your faith is that determines whether you are a Christian or saved. It is all about who you have faith in. Brothers and sisters, by the power of Christ you are forgiven.
