Every Person Not Counted Could Cost Central Valley Nearly $2,000 Annually
February 26, 2020 - WASHINGTON – Representative Josh Harder (CA-10) is warning residents of the 10th Congressional District about a political effort to manipulate the 2020 Census. The Republican National Committee (RNC) has been mailing documents labeled “2020 Congressional Census” to people in California and nationwide ahead of the official start of the Census process. Experts concerned about the accuracy of the Census warn that the mailers could confuse potential respondents. Each person not counted could cost the Central Valley approximately $2,000 in lost federal funding every year.
“Everyone needs to participate in the Census and it’s disgusting that a political organization is trying to hurt the Valley. Anything that could disrupt the results could cost our community thousands of dollars every year in lost funding for schools, roads, and public transportation,” said Rep. Harder. “People should know that real Census forms will be coming out shortly and to look for any political statements on mailers before then.”
Representative Harder supports efforts to get a complete and accurate Census count this year. Last year, he cheered the Supreme Court’s ruling which prevented the Trump Administration from asking a citizenship question on the Census in an effort to discourage participation. Rep. Harder has already produced public service announcements to encourage participation and will hold a town hall in the coming weeks focusing on the importance of the Census.
