March 16, 2020 - The Oakhurst Community Concert Band and the Oakhurst Community Jazz Band continue their 2019/20 concert season on Sunday, April 5, beginning at 3:00 P.M. in the Mountain Christian Center. Admission is free for this “Spring Concert” that features music from Broadway to Big Band Jazz
Broadway and pop selections include Selections from Mary Poppins (Feed the Birds, A Spoonful of Sugar, Chim Chim Cher-ee, Step in Time, and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious) and Variations on “Scarborough Fair.”
More classical offerings include The Hounds of Spring, a magical picture of young love in springtime. In traditional three-part overture form, it is a lovely song of praise or triumph... an attempt to capture the twin elements of the poem, exuberant youthful gaiety, and the sweetness of tender love.
Of course, the OCCB continues the tradition of showcasing marches. This concert includes two John Philip Sousa marches. The Rifle Regiment March was dedicated to the officers and men of the 3rd U.S. Infantry. King Cotton is the other Sousa military march, composed in 1895 for the Cotton States and International Exposition (1895).
The religious hymn Lead On, O King Eternal will be performed in a majestic, inspirational, spine-tingling treatment of the famous hymn that progresses from the gentle, reverent presentation of the melody by the clarinets to the uplifting brass at the finale with dramatic crescendos, swelling timpani rolls, bright trumpet fanfares, and bold trombones.
The Oakhurst Community Jazz Band will continue performing its repertoire of traditional and modern jazz pieces. A Glenn Miller based arrangement of A String Of Pearls will be complemented by contemporary versions of, Bobby Troup’s Route 66, as well as I Dreamed A Dream, Leap Frog, and All I Do Is Dream Of You.
As an added incentive to attend, a drawing will be held during the concert for 2 season tickets to the Golden Chain Theatre to be given away to a lucky audience member!
And, are you aware that OCCB contributes to our local school district music programs? Besides providing another venue for local student musicians to gain experience, OCCB donates money to purchase new music stands, instrument repairs, etc. So, attending OCCB concerts supports our wider community.
