The Interim Director of Public Works said the state is doing a study to base the tax on the number of miles driven rather than the fuel tax. This would raise more money for the state but this would be a long term fix. For the short term there may be monies that were borrowed from this fund by the state in earlier budgets that may be repaid so the loss of funding would not be so great.

February 9, 2015 - At the Tuesday, February 3, 2015 Mariposa County Board of Supervisors meeting Doug Wilson, Mariposa County Interim Director of Public Works advised the Board of Supervisors of a potential loss of $500,000 in the Road Fund for the upcoming fiscal year. This loss comes through a 25% reduction in the Highway User Tax. This is partly due to lower consumption of fuel by the motorists thus reducing the received revenues. And also with the dropping price of fuel the excise tax has also been affected.
