March 28, 2020 - The Madera County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) reports the deputy sheriff injured in Thursday’s deputy involved shooting is Neil Cuthbert, a veteran deputy with the Sheriff’s Office, assigned as a detective to the Oakhurst Substation. He is at home recovering after sustaining serious facial and head injuries. It is believed he temporarily lost consciousness during the incident.

The suspect is James Mcready of Mariposa. His condition is listed in critical condition and he is currently under arrest for assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury on a peace officer. Other potential charges are pending. While being assaulted by Mr. Mcready, Detective Cuthbert fired a single round striking Mcready in the abdomen. Mr. Mcready has a lengthy criminal history in Mariposa County and has at least one arrest in each county (Mariposa and Madera) for obstructing or delaying a peace officer.

Earlier information: 
Shortly after 10:00 today, MCSO Deputies were dispatched to a person acting erratically on Highway 41 between Road 426 and Highway 49 in downtown Oakhurst.

The first deputy on scene was a detective assigned out of the Oakhurst Substation. There was an altercation and ultimately the deputy discharged his firearm. The suspect was struck and transported to a hospital in Fresno by helicopter. The deputy received serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Fresno.
