April 4, 2020 - On Friday, Jeff Aranguena, Superintendent, Mariposa County Unified School District released the following statement to the community.

Dear Mariposa County School Community,

On March 31st, the State Superintendent and Governor released a recommendation urging all school districts in California to consider closing their Jeff Aranguena mariposafacilities until the end of the school year and strengthen distance learning opportunities for students.

At this time, Mariposa County Schools has extended the school facility closures through May 1st, and will be working with local Mariposa County officials to discuss the implications of a school facility closure through the end of the school year, if necessary. We are still hopeful we can reopen our campuses for regular instruction on May 4th.

Distance learning is taking place in different ways throughout our school community and we encourage you to contact your students’ principal and/or teacher for future guidance regarding Distance Learning opportunities for your child.

Distance learning may look different for each school, and a student's ability to learn in a Distance Learning model can be challenging compared to the traditional classroom model. We continue to ask for patience and understanding, as we are all quickly transitioning into a new way of providing learning opportunities, while continuing to navigate through the health and safety impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We understand the social and emotional impact many of our students are facing, and staff is working to stay connected in a variety of ways. We also know that many students, especially our high school seniors, are very concerned about the many celebrations and traditions seniors are accustomed to celebrating this time of year.

Please know that our district leadership team along with our Mariposa County Teachers Association is working to prioritize and address all of these issues. We are working with our principals, teachers and counselors, on how to provide rational, common sense solutions in the coming days and weeks. By early next week, staff will be providing updated guidance and a plan for students and families, which will address expectations for lessons, homework, grades, and graduation, while our campuses remain closed.

While we recognize this extension of school facility closures poses challenges and hardships to so many families in Mariposa County, as always, we are here to support our school community as we navigate this crisis together.

Sincerely,

Jeff Aranguena
Superintendent
