April 23, 2020 - On Thursday, Jeff Aranguena, Superintendent, Mariposa County Unified School District released the following statement to the community.

Dear Mariposa County School Community,

Today our Board members reviewed options for reopening our school campuses provided by our local Health Officer.

Jeff Aranguena mariposaDuring the Board meeting, after consultation with local County officials and our Mariposa County Health Officer Dr. Eric Sergienko, it was decided that Mariposa County Schools will keep campuses closed for the remainder of the year. Simply put, we cannot operate traditional classes while operating with social distancing guidelines in place.

The school year is not over. The focus for the remainder of the school year will be to provide meaningful instruction through distance learning, and continue to modify and strengthen our distance learning capability. Over the last month, staff has worked to provide a variety of instructional strategies that students can engage in to receive quality instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our team will continue to find ways to improve or distance learning models, while relying on your feedback and reflection.

This has not been an easy decision for our Mariposa County team. The leaders in our school community understand the far-reaching effects caused by this closure, and the difficulties our closure will continue to present to families. Closing our schools for the remainder of the year has real consequences in terms of social isolation and overall wellness.

Please know that our district leadership team along with our Mariposa County Teachers Association, will continue to provide ongoing education for our students, as well as provide online resources and alternative education options.

Additionally, our dedicated Food Service team will continue to ensure students who rely on our nutrition program will continue to have access to this important resource.

While we recognize all the challenges this closure brings, we all appreciate your patience and feedback as we work to cross the finish line in this virtual environment. We will now prepare to strengthen our distance learning model for summer and fall classes, if social distancing guidelines are still in place at that time.

I want to thank our employees, students, parents, and community partners for their amazing efforts and professionalism during this pandemic. The collective effort of everyone has helped our students remain connected to their school community during these unprecedented times.

Sincerely,
Jeff Aranguena
Superintendent
Mariposa County Unified School District
