May 6, 2020 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Wednesday released the following statement following the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Justin Walker’s nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals:
“Today’s Judiciary Committee hearing revealed Senate Republicans’ priorities. Rather than work to ensure thousands of workers on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak have proper protective equipment, or provide relief to parents trying to figure out how to put food on the table after losing their jobs, or support small businesses that are struggling to keep the lights on, President Trump and Senate Republicans have chosen to rush through a dangerous nominee to a lifetime judgeship on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals that will not even become vacant until September. The American people need help today. This is just the latest action by Senate Republicans and the Trump administration that ignores the magnitude of the current crisis. At this critical moment in our nation’s history, the Senate should not be prioritizing judicial nominations- especially nominees like Mr. Walker, who has been an outspoken critic of our country’s health care protections. Now, more than ever, we must protect those most in need of care. The Senate must focus on addressing COVID-19 and providing immediate relief to the American people, rather than on filling a D.C. Circuit seat that will not be vacant for another four months.”
