May 22, 2020 - San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after President Trump announced his planned withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty, which promotes openness, transparency and surveillance of military forces and activities and was negotiated and signed under President George H.W. Bush and entered into force under President George W. Bush:

“Withdrawing from the Open Skies Treaty without a replacement further undermines America’s credibility in the global community and makes Americans less safe.  

“The President’s withdrawal will senselessly blind America and our allies while emboldening our enemies.  This decision sends a clear signal to the Russians that they can continue their bad behavior unwatched and unchecked.

“The President’s pattern of attacks on the long-standing international agreements that keep us safe must end.  We must be strong, smart and strategic, standing alongside our NATO and Transatlantic partners, to keep America safe.”
