Pastors Corner 200June 10, 2020 - I invite you to turn to Matthew 13:1-9 with me and we’ll read the parable of the sower. In God’s wisdom, we have in Scripture a collection of stories Jesus told the crowds around him. He did so in order to communicate what is called in verse 11 the “secrets of the kingdom heaven”. What is being communicated in the parable today? We read of a sower who is…well…sowing…and we read of how the seed interacted with each kind of soil.

Now let us glean something of note in how the sowing was being done. Our gardening today is certainly different from ancient practices. We are far more precise in our practice. One seed per pot, wait for it to grow, then transport it to the ground and watch it grow. If you’re in Mariposa in the summer, you might need to water the plant morning and evening. You might need to water at Elder Wynter Sturtevantlunchtime as well if it’s hot enough. I think it’s safe to say that a distinction we could make between now and then could be precision. To sow like how we read about in the parable was a liberal throwing of seeds upon the soil. The seed would be found everywhere which made the whole process apt for illustrative use. Later in the chapter we do read an interpretation of the parable and we see that the seed represents the Word. In the end the parable is meant to show us how folks react to the Gospel preached. It is obvious to us that not everyone reacts to the Gospel the same way, here we have Jesus explaining that.

Let us take note of the sower and be as liberal as the sower with spreading the Gospel. We are not called for precision, to see whether one is first worthy to hear the Gospel. We are called to spread the Gospel. Preach forgiveness found in Christ. We will fail at times, but we can be comforted that we have been purchased by the Son of God and through him we are forgiven.
