Tuolumne County Environmental Health Director, Rob Kostlivy reminds folks returning to their homes or businesses: “Food that has been left in a refrigerator after four hours without power should be thrown out.In the case of the Moc Fire, power was restored to the evacuation zones prior to the repopulation of the residents. When that occurs, refrigeration units will kick on, which will begin the re-cooling of foods. When folks arrive back home and feel the food, it may give them a false sense of security however that food is likely teeming with bacteria and the odds of getting sick from consuming that food is very high. All food that may have been warmed and re-cooled should be thrown away. It may seem costly, but the alternative will cost so much more. Remember, when in doubt, throw it out.”
