September 3, 2020 - Over 12,800 firefighters are continuing to make progress towards containment on 22 major fires and lightning complexes in California. Today over 12,400 people remain Cal fireevacuated, though crews are working hard to get people back into their homes. Firefighters are closely monitoring weather conditions, as extreme heat is expected over the weekend. A light west flow will allow smoke and haze from the ongoing fires in northern California to spread across more areas of eastern California and western Nevada through at least Thursday. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect through Friday evening for strong gusty winds and low humidity in areas of Modoc County.

Since the lightning siege that started on Saturday, August 15, 2020, there have been nearly 14,000 lightning strikes. During this time-period, there have been more than 900 new wildfires, which have now burned over 1.5 million acres. There have 8 fatalities and over 3,200 structures destroyed.

Californians need to take steps to prevent sparking a wildfire. To learn more ways to prevent sparking a wildfire visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org.
