The fillies will be the first horses offered for adoption from the correctional center, which started the program last year. The facility uses inmates to train wild horses for adoption and provide a short-term holding facility for horses removed from the range.
The BLM will offer 40 wild horses, from yearlings to four year olds, and 10 burros for public adoption in Angels Camp. The horses will include three geldings and one filly halter gentled by BLM wranglers.
Anyone interested can preview the animals when they arrive at about 4 p.m. on Friday, March 13.
The event gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Adoptions begin with an hour of silent bidding at 9 a.m. Saturday. Animals not taken during bidding will be available for a $125 adoption fee.
The adoption is being held in conjunction with the Backcountry Horsemen of California's Rendezvous at the fairgrounds.
