High-Country Health Food and Cafe in Mariposa California

March 17, 2015 - During the afternoon hours of Wednesday, March 11, 2015 the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible stabbing at a campground in the Merced River area. Upon arrival deputies contacted Bryan Absher,29,  of Modesto. Mr. Absher had a stab like wound to his upper shoulder blade area.

Mr. Absher indicated he accidentally stabbed himself after slipping on loose rock and falling on a knife he was caring. While investigating the scene Deputies contacted an adult female who identified herself as Mr. Absher’s girlfriend. While interviewing her she admitted to stabbing Mr. Absher in self-defense while trying to get away from him. Reportedly she had been struck multiple times in the head, arms, face and body with a lit makeshift torch, made of a stick approximately 1" in diameter and 30" long, in front of their two minor children in common. Deputies photographed over 13 injuries to her body and one injury to her minor child.


Mr. Absher was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. 


He was then booked into the Mariposa County Jail on charges of:


273.5(F)(1) – Felony Domestic Violence

245(A)(1) – Assault With a Deadly Weapon (Not a Firearm)

273(A) – Child Abuse

23153(A) – Driving Under the Influence causing injury

14601.1(A) – Driving on a Suspended License

Mr. Absher’s bail amount is $150,000. The adult female victim and her two minor children were transported to an undisclosed location.
