Second Spring Lecture
A Timely Look Back at the Development of Merced River

NMCHC’s second Spring Lecture features Mike Jensen, Public & Government Relations Officer for the Merced Irrigation District.  He will share the history of the development of the Merced River, a 145 mile long river whose headwaters begin above 8,000 ft in the southeastern corner of Yosemite National Park and flows into the San Joaquin River just south of Turlock.  While its upper watershed is protected as a National Wild and Scenic River, once it flows beyond the Park and adjacent national forests, it has been the subject of dam-building and irrigation diversions since the early 1900s, with little of its water ever reaching the Pacific.

Lake McClure and Lake McSwain are just two of the half dozen lakes along its course.  This event will take place at the Hacienda starting at 3 p.m. Many thanks to Ron Loya who conducted the initial presentation of this 4-month series.  Those who attended now have a much keener understanding of how stamp mills evolved and the significant engineering improvements made in California when adapting older technologies to the geographical conditions of our “hard rock” mines.

, 2015: Annual Coulterville Heritage Rose Tour

The Third Annual Coulterville Heritage Rose Tour is Saturday, April 25 beginning at 10:00 a.m. This is a 2 hour walking tour that starts at the museum. Some of Coulterville’s unique roses have been here since the town was settled, with the roots carefully transported from Europe right along with the original settlers; they truly a part of the region’s living history. Connie Welch is coordinating this year’s tour by stationing guides at various locations along the route who will share their knowledge of the unique features of these beautiful and historic flowers. Lemonade and punch will be served in the museum courtyard afterwards.  Bring Your Cameras!   There is no charge to participate, but we would appreciate you calling the museum at 209.878.3015 and making a reservation so we have an idea how many will be participating.
