January 28, 2021 - SACRAMENTO – Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday on Wednesday issued the following statement regarding the White House announcement of a Civilian Climate Corps Initiative:

“Last year Governor Newsom launched the country’s first statewide corps of its kind with the mission of empowering Californians to take meaningful action to protect their homes, health and communities against the harshest impacts of climate change.

“We had always hoped California Climate Action Corps would be a model for the country and we are thrilled to work closely with the Biden-Harris Administration to scale these ideas at a national level.

“Today’s announcement reinforces California’s commitment to tackle our biggest challenges through service.”

The inaugural cohort of 63 California Climate Action Corps Fellows began their paid service this month and will spend nearly eight months working alongside community partners advancing climate action projects such as urban tree planting, food sustainability, and wildfire resilience in some of the state’s most vulnerable communities. California Volunteers is currently developing a summer program to provide climate action service opportunities for over 200 individuals and designing a statewide hub to match Californians interested in volunteering on climate projects with community organizations looking for help.
