February 3, 2021 - SONORA, Calif. — Visitors looking to enjoy rafting down the Wild and Scenic Tuolumne River on the Stanislaus National Forest will now be able to make reservations on www.recreation.gov.

Beginning this year, the river rafting community will need to make reservations online, giving the public an improved tool to help better plan their trips to the forest, including some time to visit local communities to after their river trip.

River rafting permits are required for private river trips and are not required if visitors are planning their visit with a commercial outfitter and guide.

Beginning Feb. 2, 2021, visitors should request reservations at https://www.recreation.gov/permits/621750. Visitors can make reservations up until midnight of the day of their planned launch date. Permit holders must carry a front-and-back copy of the permit (print or digital) to show agency staff at any time during their trip.

The Tuolumne River was designated as a Wild and Scenic river in 1984. Rafters looking for class IV/V+ whitewater can enjoy the remote beauty and excitement of this versatile river. The river originates in the remains of the Lyell Glacier and travels 83 miles through incredible waterfalls and glaciated canyons in Yosemite National Park, then through 27 miles of crystal clear whitewater on the Stanislaus National Forest, ending at the Don Pedro Reservoir on Bureau of Land Management land.

For more information, please visit https://www.recreation.gov/permits/621750 for more information about permit reservations, or contact the Groveland Ranger District visitor information desk at 209-962-7825.
