Dr.-Wolfgang-RoggeWho would have thought that pollutant levels indoors are often substantially higher than outdoors? Surprisingly, household cooking emissions are one of the hidden culprits responsible for both indoor and outdoor air pollution. Research has shown that residential cooking can contribute 30% to the atmospheric fine organic particle and gaseous pollutant burden.

The Mariposa AAUW (American Association of University Women) is hosting an informative program offering the community a chance to hear and talk with an expert on the topic, Dr. Wolfgang Rogge (pictured) from UC Merced’s Sierra Nevada Research Institute. The event is on Thursday, April 9th at 7:00 p.m. at the Miner’s Roadhouse 140.

Dr. Rogge will discuss the types of pollutants and their emissions and compare the impact of different cooking methods on air quality. The talk will include suggestions on how to reduce exposure to the potentially harmful  pollutants  Detailsthat are innocently cooked up in the kitchen.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

This event is part of the “Cap and Town” series offered by AAUW’s Mariposa branch to provide community members a forum to talk with experts on timely issues.

Founded in 1881, AAUW is a national organization dedicated to lifelong learning and advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. The Mariposa branch has nearly 100 members who support projects such as Tech Trek, a weeklong science camp for girls, Speech Trek, a thought-provoking speech contest and Dinner with a Scientist, an evening at UC Merced for girls interested in scientific careers.
