February 8, 2021 - (FRESNO) – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) and Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-34), released the following statement jim costa congressman california 16th districtafter the announcement that coach Tom Flores was selected for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2021: 

“This long overdue recognition is welcome news,” said Costa. “Through his illustrious athletic career and commitment to his community, Tom Flores has truly been a beacon not only for Latinos, but all fans of the National Football League (NFL). I’d like to congratulate the Coach on this lifetime achievement and thank the Hall of Fame and Selection Committee for finally elevating this pioneer to his rightful place in football history.”

“As Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Coach Flores Representative in Congress, I proudly support H.Res 27 to honor Tom Flores and his accomplishments in the Hall of Fame," said Ruiz. "Tom was the first Latino starting quarterback in professional football; he was the first Latino head coach in the NFL; he is a four-time Super Bowl winner; and he is a passionate advocate and inspiration for Hispanics throughout the community. It’s long overdue that his contributions on and off the field to the NFL, the state of California, and Hispanics across the country be recognized in this way.”

In January, Congressman Costa introduced a resolution recognizing  the Fresno native for his achievements in professional football and calling for his induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 

This was the third time Coach Flores, the sole finalist in the Class of 2021’s new Coaches Category, was considered for induction into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
