Berryhill-tom-8th-district

April 8, 2015 - Sacramento – Family of murder victim Mike Morganti were surrounded by a coalition of law enforcement, Central Valley legislators, and disability and victims’ rights advocates urging the governor to block the parole of David Weidert, the convicted killer of Morganti.

Weidert was originally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, for the 1980 murder, but the State Board of Parole formally voted to release Weidert during their January 28th, 2015 hearing.  Weidert will be let loose later this spring unless Governor Brown steps in to overturn the decision.

Pointing to Weidert’s lack of remorse and the particularly heinous nature of the crime itself, Vidak and Berryhill urged the governor to block the parole, to not only to show compassion for the family of Mike Morganti, but also to protect the safety of the communities to which he would inevitably be paroled.

Both Senator Vidak and Senator Berryhill have publically urged the governor to intervene and reverse the State Board of Parole’s decision. (Link to 2/24 letter and link to 3/11 letter).
