March 11, 2021 - Modesto, CA - On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, detectives with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Family Crimes Unit arrested an Empire couple Stanislaus Sheriff logofor allegedly abusing their five-month-old infant daughter. They are identified as 22-year-old Tasawri Ellis and 21-year-old Isabella Ramirez.

Patrol deputies were contacted by authorities with Child Protective Services late Tuesday morning regarding a small child in need of urgent medical treatment at a local area hospital. Given the severity of the young victim’s injuries, she needed to be transported to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera to be seen by specialists trained in pediatric care.

The child had sustained well over a dozen fractures over a large majority of her body consistent with manual twisting, pulling, and squeezing of various limbs and the torso. She is expected to survive her injuries.

The parents initially took their child to seek emergency medical treatment; however, there is reason to believe the trauma sustained to the victim occurred over an ongoing and reoccurring period of several days.

Investigators with Stanislaus County were aided by authorities with the Madera County Sheriff’s Office as they responded to the children’s hospital. They contacted the parents, conducted preliminary interviews, and ultimately took Ellis and Ramirez into custody for suspected child abuse. Our investigation is still active and ongoing.

Child Protective Services has taken custody of the infant. Both parents were booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center for several felony charges. No other children reside in the Empire, California home of Ellis or Ramirez.

Ramirez was booked for failure to provide medical care and willful harm or injury to a child, while Ellis was charged with failure to provide medical care, willful harm or injury to a child and mayhem. The mother was no longer in custody as of Thursday morning, as she posted bail, and the father awaits his arraignment at the Stanislaus County Superior Courthouse.

Detective Cooper can be reached at (209) 525-7114 should the public have information about this incident.
