April 24, 2021 - Prather, CA. - The High Sierra Ranger District (HSRD) began its 2021 reforestation program on 4/12/21 with a huge push to address the need of reforestation within the Creek fire footprint. As of this week, close to 100,000 pine seedlings have been planted within the Creek fire footprint with another 100,000 plus to come.

The HSRD is leveraging partnerships with the National Forest Foundation, Highway 168 Firesafe Council, and CALFIRE to make this all happen so quickly after the fire. We have also been utilizing grant funds provided through the California Climate Investments program to help fund the efforts.

The HSRD will continue its planting efforts over the next few weeks and then will follow-up with release efforts (removal and reduction of competing vegetation around the seedlings) to ensure seedling survival.

“The seedlings provided will help restore the forest, protect the soil from erosion, and help reduce sedimentation of our streams and reservoirs,” said Dean Gould, forest supervisor for the Sierra National Forest. “These partnerships are just the beginning of those that will help recover wildlife habitat and the scenic beauty of the landscape we have come to appreciate. Burned areas will see a quicker recovery with the help of trees planted with donations from our generous partners. Shared Stewardship of the Forest will be our focus moving forward”

For more information about the reforestation efforts please contact the High Sierra Ranger District at 559-855-5355.
