July 9, 2021 - Yosemite National Park officials say all of Yosemite’s inhabitants are doing whatever possible to stay cool through this weekend’s excessive heat warning. With this week’s current heat wave, many of the Sierra Nevada’s residents and visitors feel like this California ground squirrel right now. To make it through, this squirrel is heat dumping, flattening its body surface against a colder surface to cool down. Ever seen your dog sprawl out on a hot day on the tile floor? Same idea!

Are you smarter than a ground squirrel? How will you take care of yourself in the heat during your Yosemite visit? We suggest:

🌞Avoiding strenuous hiking during this time, particularly after 10am as heat increases. If you are set on doing so, start at 6 or 7am.

🌞Whether you're hiking or just strolling around Yosemite, bring a combination of water to hydrate, and food to help your body maintain in the heat. The more time outside, the more of each of those things you should carry with you. For instance, on the Half Dome or Upper Yosemite Falls hikes, taking a minimum of 4 liters per person is a great starting point.

🌞If you're bringing dogs, don't forget how hot parking lots and paved paths are for your dog's paws. Asphalts can be up to fifty degrees hotter than air, so with temperatures in the triple digits, please make sure your pets’ feet are properly protected. Be sure to bring enough water and food for them as well.

🌞Pay attention to any symptoms of heat illness. Feeling tired, dizzy, or otherwise ill are good signs to reduce your activity and get to the shade or your air-conditioned car. Turning around on the trail sooner rather than later is a great strategy of self-care in the heat.

🌞In Yosemite Valley, find water bottle friendly refilling stations at the Yosemite Valley visitor center, Degnan's Deli, and Yosemite Valley Lodge. Don't plan on encountering drinking fountains on trails in the park.
