July 11, 2021 - Whether you are swimming in your own backyard pool or visiting one of the lakes, rivers, or streams in our area, but sure you are practicing water safety!

Three Water Safety Tips:

  1. Layer on protection - block off risky areas, use life jackets, and provide close supervision of children.
  2. Make sure everyone knows how to swim - this includes knowing how to enter the water, get a breath, safe afloat, change positions, swim for an extended period of time, and safely get out of the water.
  3. Know what to do in an emergency - know how to safely retrieve someone from the water, how to direct them to safety, how to call for 911, and CPR and first aid.

Be Aware of Hazards:

  • Unexpected changes in air or water temperature
  • Currents, waves, & rapids
  • Dams, rocks, & debris blocking the way
  • Slippery rocks & surfaces both in and around the water
  • Animals & wildlife
  • Severe changes in water depth

Establish & Enforce Rules:

  • Always enter the water feet first
  • Avoid jumping or diving unless signs clearly show it is safe
  • Swim sober
  • Swim with a buddy
  • If you are supervising, don't get distracted

It sure is warm out there! Make sure you are ready to beat the heat by preparing ahead of time and paying attention. Remember, anyone can be overcome by the heat.

You can stay cool by:

  • Dressing in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Limit physical activity during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Use fans to circulate air and utilizing cooling resources like swamp coolers or AC units.
  • Take cool showers or baths or use cool compresses.
  • Avoid hot foods and heavy meals but be sure to eat to fuel your body.
  • Enjoy frozen treats!
  • Stay hydrated.
