July 22, 2021 - Senate Bill 254, introduced by Senator Andreas Borgeas (R-Fresno), was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday, July 16, 2021. Senate Bill 254 encourages public elementary and secondary schools to observe a moment of silence when September 11th falls on a school day. This effort originated last year when Senator Borgeas introduced SB 911.

September 11, 2001 was a tragic day for the people of the United States. Nineteen members of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked four United States passenger airliners and carried out one of the worst attacks on US soil. Two planes hit the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane hit the Pentagon, and another was downed in a field in Pennsylvania as passengers and crew fought to regain control. A total of 2,977 lives were lost as a result of the attacks.

“September 11th was an unforgettable day for the people of the United States,” said Senator Borgeas. “By designating September 11th each year as a day of remembrance and encouraging students to observe a moment of silence, we can honor the memory of the innocent lives lost and the courageous heroes on that solemn day. We will never forget.”

Senator Borgeas also has the honor of representing the California 9/11 Memorial, located in Clovis, California. Each year, a group of community members, first responders and military personnel gather at the memorial to honor the memory of the victims on September 11, 2001.
