Fierce competition at the pond

May 6, 2015 - Senator Tom Berryhill (R-Twain Harte) is pleased to announce the winners of the 41st annual Capitol Frog Jump. Elected officials, legislative staffers, media and members of the public jockeyed their frogs in hopes of winning the coveted trophies.

There are three winning categories: longest, shortest and media jump. There were no flies in the ointment this year.  Every jump was spectacular – some more so than others. Trophies and bragging rights were awarded to winners of the following categories:

Longest Jump goes to Senator Runner’s Legislative Aide, Doria Wallentine, and her frog R2Green2.  R2Green2 jumped an impressive 10ft 9.5 in.

Shortest Jump went to the Department of Food and Ag’s Undersecretary, Jim Houston. Mr.Houston’s frog, Clayton Kerfrog only jumped 3ft 3 in.

And finally, the Media Jump winner is once again KFBK reporter, Joe Michaels and his frog Christopher Ribbit.  Christopher and Joe have been down this road before and are returning champtions from the 2013 jump.  This year Christopher cleared a full 8ft 5 in of the Capitol lawn.

"Another great Capitol Frog Jump! Good old fashioned fun and lots of laughs,” said Berryhill. “It is a busy time of year at the Capitol and this is a great stress reducer. Really, how seriously can you take yourself when you’re on the ground whispering to a frog?" said Berryhill. "Lots of good spirited competition defines the day that is for sure."

Senator Berryhill represents Calaveras County in the state Senate.  The Capitol Frog Jump is an unofficial kick off to the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee.  The fair starts May 14 and runs through the 17th this year. For more information, visit www.frogtown.org.

"I kept my regular frog, Watertight, on the bench this year. I jumped ‘Tastes Like Chicken’ instead.  Unfortunately, his 7ft jump just didn’t cut mustard either. Berryhill quipped.

Started in 1928, the frog jump was inspired by Mark Twain's fictional work, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."  The Calaveras County Fair adopted the Jumping Frog as their theme 10 years later. The public can watch the official Calaveras County Frog Jump at the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee in Angels Camp, which runs May 15-18th.  For more information, visit www.frogtown.org.
