September 3, 2021 - SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday issued the following statement regarding the death of Correctional Lieutenant Robert “Bobby” Travelstead of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office:

“It is with great sadness that Jennifer and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and members of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office on this devastating loss. Lieutenant Travelstead dedicated his life to service, working to ensure the safety of his community and our nation, and we are forever grateful.”

Lieutenant Travelstead, 40, passed away on September 1, 2021, due to complications from COVID-19.

Lieutenant Travelstead joined the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office in 2007 as a Correctional Deputy and served in several roles in the Detention Division. He promoted to Sergeant in 2014 and worked as a Supervisor at the Main Adult Detention Facility, North County Detention Facility and Pretrial Services. In 2019, he promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned to the Main Adult Detention Facility as the Watch Commander.

Lieutenant Travelstead’s commitment to service began in 2001 as a member of the U.S. Navy. In 2006, he was honorably discharged as a decorated veteran, having served as a Field Medical Corpsman for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and Naval Service in Southwest Asia during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lieutenant Travelstead is survived by his two daughters, Kaylie and Kiana, and three siblings.

In honor of Lieutenant Travelstead, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

With great sadness and a heavy heart, we inform our community of the passing of Sonoma County Correctional Lieutenant Bobby Travelstead. Bobby passed away on Wednesday , September 1, at a local hospital from complications related to COVID-19.

Bobby was an honorably discharged and decorated veteran of the US Navy, having served from 2001 to 2006 as a Field Medical Corpsman for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and Naval Service in Southwest Asia during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Bobby started his career at the Sheriff’s Office in June of 2007 as a Correctional Deputy. He served in several critical roles in the Detention Division including, Classification, Field Training Officer (FTO), and Pretrial Services. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2014 and worked as a supervisor at the Main Adult Detention Facility (MADF), North County Detention Facility (NCDF), and Pretrial Services. Bobby was exceptionally proud of his ten years of service, both as a Deputy and a Sergeant on the SERT team. Bobby was promoted to Lieutenant in 2019 and worked as a Watch Commander at MADF. Bobby served the FTO program, both as a Sergeant and Lieutenant, and had a hand in molding the future of the Detention Division. Throughout his career at the Sheriff’s Office, Bobby was very involved in the Peer Support Program and truly understood the importance of taking care of each other. Bobby’s personality and sincerity made him a well-liked co-worker and respected leader. Bobby is survived by his two daughters.

Con gran tristeza y un gran pesar, informamos a nuestra comunidad del fallecimiento del teniente correccional del condado de Sonoma, Bobby Travelstead. Bobby falleció el miercoles 1 de septiembre en un hospital local por complicaciones relacionadas con COVID-19.
