California Statewide Fire Summary for September 4, 2021

September 4, 2021 - Nearly 14,700 firefighters remain on the frontlines of 13 major wildfires and two extended attack wildfires burning in California. Firefighters continue to make good progress with increased Cal Firecontainment figures on many of the fires, and even full containment on two of the wildfires. Additionally, yesterday firefighters responded to 26 new initial attack wildfires, all of which were quickly extinguished.

Since the beginning of the year, California wildfires have burned more than 1.96 million acres, which is larger than the state of Delaware. To better provide for public and firefighter safety due to the ongoing wildfires in the state, the US Forest Service temporarily closed all National Forests in California through September 17, 2021.

In the northern part of the state, warmer and very dry weather is expected through Monday, with high temperatures warming to around 10 degrees above normal. While winds will remain on the lighter than normal side through Monday, the relative humidity will remain low and will drop further over the next several days with poor overnight recoveries becoming more widespread. Fire weather concerns will increase on Tuesday as an approaching upper-level trough begins breaking down the upper-level ridge. In the southern region, temperatures will be 5 – 10 degrees above normal through early next week. A heat advisory for the southeastern part of the state remains in effect from 11 am today through 8 pm on Monday. Hot and very dry conditions will bring an elevated threat for large fire through early next week.

As temperatures climb this holiday weekend, CAL FIRE urges all Californians to use extreme caution when outdoors. A wildfire that is sparked under these conditions can spread rapidly, threatening lives and homes. To learn ways to prevent sparking a wildfire, visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org.
